Vote to concur with Senate amendments and pass a bill that prohibits public employers from providing medical benefits to domestic partners of public employees.

Highlights:

• Prohibits public employers from providing medical benefits or other fringe benefits for an individual living in the same residence as a public employee unless that individual is (Sec. 3):
• Married to the public employee;
• A dependent of the public employee; or
• Otherwise eligible to inherit from the employee under the laws of intestate succession.

• Defines “medical benefits” as medical, optical, or dental benefits including, but not limited to, hospital and physician services and prescription drugs (Sec. 2).

• Defines “public employee” as any individual employed or appointed to a position in any of the following entities (Sec. 2):
• State government;
• The public school service;
• 1 or more of the political subdivisions of the state;
• A public or special district;
• An authority, commission or board of the state; or
• Any other branch of the public service.

• Specifies that this bill will apply to current contracts and collective bargaining agreements with public employees once such contracts or agreements have been amended, extended, renewed, or once they have expired (Sec. 4).
