Title: Mississippi Education Reform Act

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that provides additional base pay for teachers licensed and employed in “critical subject areas,” teaching in teacher shortage areas, or working in schools designated “improving” according to standardized test scores. The bill also states that all teachers meeting the federal standards for “highly qualified teachers” are eligible for a standard five-year Mississippi teaching license. The bill exempts high-performing schools from certain accreditation process standards and gives them the freedom to “adopt any order” within state and federal law, with limited exceptions. The bill also requires state funding for pre-Advanced Placement tests, to be taken in a student’s sophomore year, establishes a virtual public school, and allows auditing of statewide financial reports of school districts, in addition to the development of a process to include drop-out data in the state’s accountability system.
