Vote to pass a bill that authorizes the parole of certain state inmates who are over the age of 60.

Highlights:

• Authorizes the Department of Public Safety and Corrections to consider an inmate over the age of 60 for parole if the inmate has met all of the following criteria (Sec. 1):
• The inmate has served at least 10 years of his or her sentence;
• The inmate has not been convicted of a violent or sexual crime;
• The inmate has not committed any disciplinary offenses within the last 12 consecutive months prior to the parole eligibility date;
• The inmate has completed a minimum of 100 hours of prerelease programming, if such programming is available;
• The inmate has completed substance abuse treatment, if applicable;
• The inmate has completed the GED or possesses a high school diploma unless a certified educator deems the inmate incapable of completing either requirement, in which case the inmate is required to complete a literacy program, an adult basic education program, or a job-skills training program; and
• The inmate has obtained a low risk level designation, as determined by a validated risk assessment instrument approved by the Secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
