Title: Administration of Epilepsy Medication in Schools

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that authorizes non-medical personnel to administer epilepsy medication to students at school in the absence of a licensed physician or trained nurse, upon completion of voluntary training.

Highlights:
-Specifies that medication should be administered by medical personnel whenever possible (Sec. 2). -Authorizes school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools to provide non-medical employees with voluntary emergency medical training (Sec. 2). -Authorizes the parent or guardian of a student with epilepsy to request that the school train a staff member in anti-seizure medication administration or select currently licensed medical personnel in the district to administer the medication (Sec. 2). -Requires the department to develop training guidelines for employees and post these instructions online (Sec. 2). -Requires the school to notify a medically licensed professional every time emergency epilepsy medication has been administered (Sec 2.) -Requires the school administrator or a school staff member to notify a parent or guardian when an emergency anti-seizure medication has been administered to their child (Sec. 2).
