Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that revises provisions governing credits for offenders convicted of non-violent category B felonies.

Highlights:

• Authorizes the Department of Corrections to award credits to incarcerated individuals, or individuals that are on parole, for the following educational achievements (Sec. 1):
• 60 days of credit for earning an educational development certificate;
• 90 days of credit for earning a high school diploma; and
• 120 days of credit for individuals who earn their first associate degree.

• Requires that credits must be deducted from the maximum term imposed by the sentence and apply to eligibility for parole, unless the offender's sentence specifies a minimum amount of time that must be served before the person can become eligible for parole (Sec. 1).

• Exempts persons convicted of the following crimes from being eligible to receive credits pursuant to this act (Sec. 1):
• Any felony involving the use of force or violence against the victim;
• Any sexual offense that is punishable as a felony; or
• Any Category A felony.
