Title: Education Appropriations for 2011-2012

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that appropriates funds for public education in Alabama for fiscal year 2011-2012, effective October 1, 2011.

Highlights:

  • Appropriates funds from the Education Trust fund as follows (Secs. 3 & 5):
    • $3.62 billion for K-12 schools;
    • $317.4 million for the 2-year college system;
    • $1.04 billion for public colleges and universities;
    • $43 million for the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind; and
    • $5 million for the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative.
  • Specifies that the appropriations for K-12 schools shall not be used to determine pupil-teacher ratios (Sec. 3).
  • Authorizes local boards of education to determine where reductions shall be made in order to provide the minimum school term of 180 instructional days using the funds appropriated in this act (Sec. 3).
  • This act is effective October 1, 2011 (Sec. 20). 
  • Rep. Scott intended to vote "Nay."
