Title: Limits Artificial Trans Fats
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits food facilities from preparing or serving food that contains artificial trans fats, beginning January 1, 2013.
- Defines "food containing artificial trans fat" as food that includes vegetable shortening, margarine, or any kind of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (Sec. 5).
- Defines a "food facility" as an entity that prepares, packages, serves, vends, or otherwise provides food for human consumption at the retail level (Sec. 5).
- Exempts from the ban the following (Secs. 5 & 15):
- Naturally occurring trans fats;
- Food sold or served in the manufacturer's original sealed packaging;
- Entities operated by local or state government;
- Entities operated by a private school or public school district; and
- Small businesses.
- Prohibits private and public school vending machines from selling any foods containing artificial trans fats beginning January 1, 2013 (Sec. 20).
