Title: Hospital Admissions and Restrictions

Vote to pass a bill that requires hospital employees to report patients that cannot prove their immigration status

Highlights:
  • Requires a hospital to confirm, at some point during the treatment of a patient, that he or she is a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of the United States, or lawfully present in the United States in cases where the person cannot provide proof of health insurance (Sec. 1).
  • Authorizes the admissions officer or representative to verify the legal status through the following means (Sec. 1):
    • A United States military I.D.;
    • A driver license from any state of the United States;
    • Any valid documentation of identity and residence issued by a state in this country;
    • Proof of citizenship from a country that participates in the visa waiver program recognized by the United States;
    • Proof of Canadian citizenship; or
    • Proof of a valid non-immigrant visa that is recognized by the United States government.
  • Requires the admissions officer or someone not involved in the actual medical care of a patient to contact the local federal immigration office or local law enforcement to report an incident where the legal status of a patient cannot be verified (Sec. 1).
