Vote to pass a bill that prohibits school districts from using a "last-hired, first-fired layoff policy" when terminating staff.

Highlights:

• Prohibits school districts from using a "last-hired, first fired layoff policy" when terminating school district employees (Sec. 2).

• Defines a "last-hired, first-fired layoff policy" as a policy that mandates the termination of an employee who started work with the district most recently before terminating a more senior employee (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes school districts to consider the following factors when terminating a school district employee (Sec. 2):
• The results of employee's performance evaluation; and
• The personnel needs of the school.

• Requires the Education Interim Committee, in consultation with the State Board of Education, to "study how the performance of teachers may be evaluated for the purpose of awarding or eliminating teacher career employee status" (Sec. 3).
