Title: Wireless Telecommunication Devices

Vote to pass a bill restricting wireless mobile phone use while driving.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits any person operating a moving motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth from initiating a call, answering a call, or talking on a wireless telecommunications device unless (Sec. 1):
    • The device is configured for hands-free use; and
    • The device is being used in the hands-free mode.
  • Repeals the prohibition of officers from issuing citations for use of wireless telecommunications devices unless the officer has cause to stop or arrest the driver for the violation of another provision relating to the operation, ownership, or maintenance of a motor vehicle (Sec. 2).
  • Increases the fine for a first violation from $20 to $100 and the fine for a second or subsequent violation from $50 to $200 (Sec. 2).
