Title: Bans Texting While Driving

Vote to pass a bill that prohibits the use of wireless communications devices while driving.

Highlights:

  • Prohibits an operator of a motor vehicle that is a part of traffic from using a wireless communications device to compose, read, or send an electronic message, except when used for emergency purposes (Sec. 4).
  • Establishes penalties for a violation of this bill as follows (Secs. 1, 3 & 4):
    • For a first offense, a fine of $100 and the addition of 2 demerit points to an individual's driving record;
    • For a second offense, a fine of $100 and the addition of 4 demerit points to an individual's driving record; and
    • For a third or subsequent offense, a fine of $100, the addition of 4 demerit points to an individual's driving record, and a year-long suspension of the individual's driver's license.
