Title: Repealing Teacher Tenure

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that removes continuing contract status from the Wyoming teacher employment law and establishes procedures for nonprobationary teachers who receive notice of termination.

Highlights:

  • Authorizes the termination of a probationary teacher's employment for any reason not specifically prohibited by law, and specifies that a probationary teacher shall be notified in writing of the reasons for termination no later than April 15 each year (Sec. 1).
  • Defines "probationary teacher" as a teacher who has been employed by the same school district within the state for less than 3 consecutive school years and has not had his or her contract renewed for a 4th consecutive school year (Sec. 1).
  • Specifies that with the exception of probationary teachers, any teacher receiving notice of termination is entitled to a hearing before the board regarding the reasons for termination upon submission of a written request to the board, within 7 days after receipt of the termination notice (Sec. 1).
  • Requires the board to issue a written order to either terminate or retain the teacher within 20 days of the hearing (Sec. 1).

NOTE: THIS IS A SUBSTITUTE BILL, MEANING THE LANGUAGE OF THE ORIGINAL BILL HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE DEGREE TO WHICH THE SUBSTITUTE BILL TEXT DIFFERS FROM THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE TEXT CAN VARY GREATLY.
