Title: Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements

Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass a bill that requires home owners to install carbon monoxide detectors on all habitable floors of the home beginning February 1, 2011.

Highlights:
-Requires home owners to install carbon monoxide detectors in the basement and each additional floor level not including the attic, garage or storage unit (Sec. 2). -Requires home owners to install detectors in accordance with the directions and specifications of the manufacture and that the detector must feature an Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. listing mark (Sec. 2). -Requires home owners to fix a carbon monoxide detector within 5 days of written notification from an occupant that the detector is not functional (Sec. 2). -Specifies that home owners are not responsible for damages resulting from a false alarm that was "reasonably maintained" by the owner or from failure of the detector to operate because it was tampered with (Sec. 2). -Exempts homes that have no attached garage, fireplace, or fuel burning appliances from installing detector requirement (Sec. 2).
