Vote to pass a bill that modifies regulations relating to the content of snack foods and beverages sold in schools.

Highlights:

-Requires any snack food item sold to students through a school vending machine or school store to meet all of the following nutritional standards (Sec. 1):

-For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from kindergarten to grade six, it must contain no more than 150 calories; -For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from grade seven to grade eight, it must contain no more than 180 calories; -For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from grade nine to grade twelve, it mut contain no more than 200 calories; -For any school, it must have no more than 35 percent of its total calories derived from fat, excepting unsalted nuts or seeds; -For any school, it must have no more than 10 percent of its total calories derived from saturated fat; -For any school, it must contain zero trans fat, -For any school, no more than 35 percent of its total weight may be composed of processed sugar; and -For any school; it must not contain more than 230 milligrams of sodium per serving.

-For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from kindergarten to grade six:
-Water; -8 ounces or less of low-fat or fat-free milk, including flavored milk, provided that the beverage contains no more than 150 calories per 8 ounces, including nutritionally equivalent milk alternatives; -8 ounces or less of 100 percent fruit juice, regardless of whether the juice contains water, provided that the beverage contains no added sweeteners, at least 10 percent of the recommended daily value for three or more vitamins and minerals, and no more than 120 calories per 8 ounces;
-For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from grade seven to grade eight:
-Water; -10 ounces or less of low-fat or fat-free milk, including flavored milk, provided that the beverage contains no more than 150 calories per 8 ounces, including nutritionally equivalent milk alternatives; -10 ounces or less of 100 percent fruit juice, regardless of whether the juice contains water, provided that the beverage contains no added sweeteners, at least 10 percent of the recommended daily value for three or more vitamins and minerals, and no more than 120 calories per 8 ounces;
-For a school with the majority of grades being in the range from grade nine to grade twelve:
-Water; -16 ounces or less of low-fat or fat-free milk, including flavored milk, provided that the beverage contains no more than 150 calories per 8 ounces, including nutritionally equivalent milk alternatives; -12 ounces or less of 100 percent fruit juice, regardless of whether the juice contains water, provided that the beverage contains no added sweeteners, at least 10 percent of the recommended daily value for three or more vitamins and minerals, and no more than 120 calories per 8 ounces; -Provided at least 50 percent of beverages offered for sale at any one time are water or fruit juice (that meets the aforementioned requirements), any no-calorie or low-calorie beverage that contains no more than 10 calories per 8 ounces; and -Provided at least 50 percent of beverages offered for sale at any one time are water or fruit juice (that meets the aforementioned requirements), twelve ounces or less of any other beverage that contains no more than 66 calories per 8 ounces.
